Cuban mahogany, stone base

Clay Foster creates a work of art to stir the soul in any space.

Long, fibrous towers of Cuban mahogany stand in two, mounted onto a stone base. Its grand body is gradually reduced from the base, as the eye trails the form all the way to the top of the composition. The gaze rests upon its summit, a polished, gradient angle. 

Drawing upon numerous inspirations, such as surface and texture found in nature upon canyon walls and rock formations, Foster similarly treats his composition. Porous textures sweep across the sculpture. Fissures score the wooden body, while pleasurably traveling in unison, in contrast to the angularity at the top of the piece. Peculiarities in his material are highlighted, further revealing the depth of character and organic lure of his muse.

In one of his mahogany towers, Foster has carefully carved space that pierces all the way through the wooden figure. In this fantastical reprieve, the artist has offered a vantage point. Little steps lead up to a platform, offering a story of the weary traveler, walking these few steps to feast upon the rewards seen past a dramatic drop beyond. 

Smooth, yet grainy composition, with direct lines and subtle curvature portrays a work of art in flux, an ever-evolving germination of the artist’s inspiration. A strong, almost architectural statement is balanced with the soft dawning of nature. Grounded substance is yet an opportunity to venture into a daydreaming reverie. Foster creates a portal into his visceral imagination, where juxtaposing motions irrevocably unite in the patterns of life.
